The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has resolved its long-running internal crisis, marking what officials described as a major turning point for Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Speaking after the National Executive Committee (NEC), meeting held in Abuja on July 1, 2025, the party’s Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okey Osuoha, announced that all leadership disputes and factional divisions had been laid to rest.
“This is a significant moment for the PDP. All disputes have been settled, and we are now speaking with one voice. There are no factions any longer,” Osuoha declared. “This is a decision made in the interest of Nigeria and the future of democracy.”
The NEC meeting ended with a unanimous resolution to reinstate Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, a move described as critical to healing internal rifts.
Osuoha explained that the outcome was the result of genuine consultations and consensus among party stakeholders, reflecting a shared commitment to unity, internal democracy, and national progress.
He emphasized that the PDP is now repositioned to play its role as a strong opposition party, promising to defend democracy and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
The meeting also reaffirmed Umar Damagum as the party’s Acting National Chairman pending the next convention.
The development has been welcomed by party members and political observers, who expressed optimism that the reconciliation would bring stability to the party and bolster democratic engagement nationwide.
