A herder in Ogun State has been left devastated after a lightning strike killed several of his cows; his sole source of livelihood.
The incident occurred in the early hours in a remote part of the state, stunning residents who described the strike as unusually intense.
The herder, visibly distraught, said the loss could lead to financial ruin for his family.
“These cows were all I had to feed my wife and children,” he lamented, appealing to the government and well-meaning Nigerians for help.
Eyewitnesses at the scene were divided on the cause, with some attributing it to natural weather activity, while others speculated about supernatural forces, a belief common in rural communities.
Local leaders have urged the state and federal governments to support the affected herder and investigate the incident to prevent future occurrences.
They also renewed calls for insurance and safety nets for rural dwellers who depend on livestock for survival.
As of press time, neither the Ogun State government nor the Nigerian Meteorological Agency had issued an official statement on the incident.
