Chairman and CEO of Channels Media Group, Dr. John Momoh, OON, has called on Nigerian media professionals to pursue truth over sensationalism, urging them to become champions of inclusion, empathy, and national healing.
Speaking at the 2025 National Biennial Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu, Momoh emphasized that the media’s role goes beyond gatekeeping, stressing that journalists are builders of national conscience.
“This is not just a topic. It is a national conversation; timely and necessary,” Momoh said, referencing the theme: ‘Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion and the Media.’
He noted that true nation-building demands the media to amplify the voices of the marginalized; women, youth, ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities and insisting that “healing begins with being heard.”
Dr. Momoh urged journalists to create platforms for honest dialogue across generations and communities.
“Let’s not just report conflict. Let’s spotlight solutions. Let’s raise the standard of our work. Let’s pursue truth, not clicks,” he said.
The veteran broadcaster praised Enugu’s rich journalistic history, recalling pioneers like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, M.C.K. Ajuluchukwu, and Uche Chukwumerije who wielded their pens as tools for justice during turbulent times.
He also reminded attendees that a secure Nigeria cannot be achieved without justice, unity without fairness, or progress without genuine inclusion.
“Even in the darkest times, the light of truth can shine from the pressroom,” Momoh declared, challenging editors and reporters to help shape a just, united, and inclusive Nigeria.
