The Federal Ministry of Education has called for calm and dialogue over the ongoing dispute surrounding the implementation of the new national minimum wage for primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Reacting to a communiqué issued by the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), after an emergency meeting in Gwagwalada on March 22, 2025, Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, acknowledged the union’s concerns and reaffirmed the federal government’s appreciation of teachers’ critical role.
While noting that primary schools in the FCT are administered by the six Area Councils, the Minister stressed the government’s commitment to teachers’ welfare and professional growth nationwide.
Dr. Alausa, in collaboration with FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, UBEC, and other stakeholders, urged Area Council chairmen to actively engage in efforts to resolve the issue peacefully.
The Ministry warned that reforms under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda must be sustained through fairness and cooperation, urging all parties to act in good faith to avoid disruptions to learning.
