The Social Democratic Party (SDP), has suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, over allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.
Also affected by the suspension are the party’s National Auditor, Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader, Uchechukwu Chukwuma.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, said the decision followed “grave allegations of embezzlement, misappropriation, and diversion of party funds.”
He added that the action was taken in accordance with Articles 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the party’s 2022 amended constitution.
According to Aiyenigba, the suspensions were based on the findings of the National Working Committee (NWC), which reviewed what it described as “overwhelming evidence” of unauthorized financial transactions, personal enrichment, and illegal diversion of party resources without NWC approval.
“This action is part of our commitment to transparency and accountability,” the statement read. “The SDP is determined to show Nigerians that we have zero tolerance for corruption and financial recklessness.”
An interim audit panel has been constituted to examine the party’s financial records and recommend appropriate disciplinary or legal action.
In the interim, Deputy National Chairman, Sadiq Umar Abubakar, has been appointed to serve as Acting National Chairman pending the outcome of investigations.
The party further disclosed that it has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), anti-graft agencies, and relevant security bodies of the development.
The suspensions mark a major shakeup within the SDP leadership as the party attempts to reinforce public confidence ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
