The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has raised concerns over a growing leadership crisis at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, following the reappointment of Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye as Acting Medical Director despite the expiration of his tenure.

In a statement on Monday, NMA Lagos Chairman, Dr. Babajide Saheed, described the move by the Federal Ministry of Health as a violation of public service rules and a threat to institutional stability.

He argued that the role should have gone to the next most senior officer in line with civil service guidelines.

“The reappointment without due process is troubling and sets a dangerous precedent,” Saheed said.

While acknowledging the Ministry’s initial response to staff concerns, Saheed warned that ongoing procedural breaches would erode morale, affect patient care, and destabilize the hospital.

He urged the government to uphold public service regulations and ensure leadership appointments reflect merit and transparency in line with President Tinubu’s healthcare reform agenda.

The hospital, a key mental health facility in Nigeria, risks being undermined by poor leadership decisions, the NMA warned.
