The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to relocating traders and mechanics at Apo to a better-equipped site in Wasa District, ending a two-decade wait for resettlement.
Wike gave the assurance on Friday, June 20, 2025, during a meeting with members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association held at the Apo Mechanic Village.
The engagement was aimed at fostering transparency and addressing concerns about the relocation process.
The Minister emphasized that the planned relocation is not a displacement but a step towards creating a more organized, safe, and growth-friendly business environment, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision.
“We are not pushing anyone out,” Wike said. “This is about building a better business hub where you can operate with dignity, security, and infrastructure support.”
He announced that the Wasa site is being prepared with modern amenities including internal road networks, electricity, clean water, and designated areas for specific trades to flourish.
Wike also directed relevant departments of the FCTA and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), to speed up development at the Wasa site and maintain close collaboration with the traders to ensure a smooth transition.
Representatives of the traders expressed gratitude for the Minister’s direct involvement, pledging their cooperation to facilitate the move.
Also present at the meeting were key officials including the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu; former FCT Senator, Philip Aduda; Executive Secretary of FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda; and heads of land-related departments.
The relocation is part of broader efforts to decongest informal settlements, restore environmental order, and support structured urban growth in the FCT.
