The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims that a viral video showing a schoolgirl smoking originated from Nigeria.
In a statement released on Monday, the police said a thorough investigation confirmed the video was not filmed within the country.
The footage, which triggered public outrage on social media, showed a young girl in a school uniform smoking a substance believed to be marijuana.
Many Nigerians expressed concern over perceived moral decline among youths.
However, after analyzing the video and consulting relevant authorities, the police concluded that the individuals and environment in the clip are not Nigerian.
The Force urged the public to avoid sharing unverified content that could damage the country’s image or cause misinformation.
The police reiterated their commitment to upholding societal values and called on parents, schools, and communities to instill discipline and moral guidance in children.
They also advised the public to verify information before sharing it online to prevent the spread of falsehoods and unnecessary alarm.
