The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has increased the national grid’s transformer capacity by 5,910 megavolt-amperes (MVA), marking a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
The expansion was achieved through projects managed by TCN’s Project Management Unit (PMU), and supported by international partners including the World Bank, AFD, and the African Development Bank.
Aminu Tahir, General Manager for Project Coordination and Technical Assistant to the TCN MD/CEO, said the ongoing projects, many of which are nearing completion, have already enhanced grid efficiency.
He also revealed that procurement processes for additional upgrades, especially in Lagos and Ogun states, are underway with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Meanwhile, TCN has restored bulk power transmission via the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi 330kV line, which was damaged by storms that caused six transmission towers to collapse in Kebbi State.
Emergency repairs were completed and the line re-energized by 12:40 PM on Wednesday.
TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said engineers worked round the clock to restore service, reaffirming the company’s commitment to grid reliability and uninterrupted electricity transmission nationwide.
