The Department of State Services (DSS), has revealed that more than 200 of its operatives have been killed in efforts to contain unrest in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The disclosure was made during a court session on Monday, where the agency submitted evidence outlining the impact of violence on its operations.
The DSS, Nigeria’s lead domestic intelligence agency, said its personnel have been targeted in ambushes and attacks linked to separatist agitations and criminal activities in the region.
The agency described the deaths as a significant loss, highlighting the growing insecurity in the South-East.
During the court proceedings, DSS counsel emphasized the courage of its operatives working under life-threatening conditions to maintain peace and protect civilians.
They urged the court to consider the grave challenges the agency faces, as its officers are increasingly targeted by armed groups.
The agency noted that the killings have disrupted intelligence gathering and compromised security operations.
It called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to intensify efforts to restore stability in the region.
The South-East has seen a rise in violence in recent years, with attacks on security forces, public institutions, and civilians, often attributed to separatist and criminal groups.
The DSS reaffirmed its commitment to national security and pledged to honor the memory of its fallen personnel by continuing its mission to safeguard lives and property.
