The Federal Government has launched a nationwide sensitisation campaign for the implementation of a Local Government Proof of Address System under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The campaign was flagged off Monday in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, Engr. Nadungu Gagare.
Akume said the initiative aims to provide all Nigerians with secure and verifiable addresses, fully integrated into public and private sector systems.
He described the address system as a major step toward improving grassroots governance, tackling insecurity, and enhancing service delivery nationwide.
According to a statement from the Office of the SGF, the system will be implemented across all 774 local government areas and is expected to support identity verification, national planning, and digital service delivery.
National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Bello Lawal, represented by Simon Akala, said the initiative will enable financial inclusion, voter registration, national identity documentation, passport processing, and utility access.
The Postmaster General of the Nigerian Postal Service, Tola Adeyemi, represented by Mrs. Rose Ismaila, reaffirmed NIPOST’s commitment to the project.
She noted that NIPOST is working to ensure that every street and building in Nigeria is linked with a digital postcode for easy identification and national development.
Stakeholders at the event commended the move and urged continued collaboration across government levels and the private sector to ensure successful implementation.
The Proof of Address System is expected to transform Nigeria’s administrative structure at the grassroots, where formal address systems have long been lacking.
