The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria (CLCN), has issued a strong call on the Nigerian government to take immediate and decisive action as renewed violence continues to ravage Benue State.

Describing the region as once again becoming Nigeria’s sacrificial ground, the Council warned that the valley of blood in Nigeria has reopened its veins.

In a press statement released on Monday, the CLCN, in partnership with the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria and drawing inspiration from the teachings of Pope Leo XIII, decried the government’s silence and inaction as innocent lives are lost and communities displaced.

The Council said Nigeria is witnessing another heartbreaking chapter of violence, especially in rural areas like Benue, where ongoing clashes between farmers and herders have become a grim reality.

It emphasized that what is happening in Benue is not just a local crisis but a national tragedy demanding urgent intervention.

The CLCN pointed to historical grievances, land disputes, worsening economic hardship, and the growing impact of climate change as key drivers of the current conflict.

These issues, according to the Council, have turned Benue into a landscape of blood, where families are being wiped out, homes destroyed, and children orphaned.

Calling on the government to fulfill its constitutional duty of protecting lives and property, the Council demanded an urgent security response to safeguard communities.

It also stressed the need for meaningful dialogue among stakeholders to foster reconciliation and lasting peace.

The Council urged authorities to support victims with healthcare, trauma counseling, and proper resettlement.

It further called for legislative reforms that protect the rights of farmers and vulnerable communities, while ensuring that those affected are included in policy decisions.

The Council lamented that continued government inaction not only deepens the suffering of the people but also erodes the moral fabric and unity of the nation.

It urged political leaders to rise above tribal loyalty and political convenience and to act in the interest of humanity and justice.

Beyond government efforts, the CLCN appealed to all Catholics and Nigerians to stand up, speak out, and play their part in ending the violence.

Echoing the words of Pope Leo XIII, the Council reminded the faithful of their duty to participate in building a just and peaceful society.

Signed by Acting National President Barrister Martins Braimah and National Secretary General Barrister Dame Chisara W. Egwim-Chima, the statement concluded with a sobering challenge.

The blood that has stained the valley of Nigeria is a cry for justice. The time for action is now.
