The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), has confirmed the death of a tricycle operator following a fatal crash involving a one-way-driving SUV along the Badagry Expressway.
In a statement on Sunday, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the accident occurred at Origan, Oko-Afo, and involved a commercial tricycle (MUS 716 QM), and a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV with custom plate “OSUNFNKE.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the SUV driver was travelling against traffic from Ile-Epo towards Oko-Afo when he collided head-on with the oncoming tricycle, fatally injuring the operator.
“The SUV driver fled the scene after abandoning both his vehicle and the victim’s body,” Bakare-Oki said in a statement signed by LASTMA spokesperson, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo.
Police from Morogbo Division have taken over the case, while the Federal Road Safety Corps evacuated the deceased to the Badagry General Hospital mortuary.
Bakare-Oki condemned the act, calling it a tragic reminder of the dangers of traffic lawlessness.
He urged motorists to obey road regulations, stressing that one life lost is one too many.
He extended condolences to the deceased’s family and reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to safer roads through enforcement and public education.
