Former Senate President David Mark has warned that residents of Benue State may be forced to defend themselves if the government continues to fail in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property.

In a statement issued Sunday by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the relentless attacks and killings across Benue communities as senseless, tragic, and unacceptable.

He said the worsening insecurity had reached a tipping point and urged authorities to act swiftly.

“This is the unfortunate reality confronting Benue people. Government must rise to its responsibility or risk leaving citizens with no option but to defend themselves,” Mark said.

He lamented the persistent loss of lives and destruction of property, stressing that the primary duty of any government is the protection and welfare of its people.

Failure to do so, he noted, is a grave disservice to the nation.

Mark urged the federal government to act decisively to end the violence and called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to intensify peace and security efforts across the state.

Appealing for grassroots cooperation, he urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to work closely with security agencies to identify and apprehend the attackers.

“This is a trying moment for our people. We must unite, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders,” he said.

While acknowledging the pain and provocation suffered by victims, Mark appealed for restraint, urging residents to remain law-abiding and not resort to vengeance, but to uphold unity and communal support.
