The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding elderly residents from abuse, neglect, and other forms of mistreatment across Abuja.

Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, made this known during a media briefing to mark the 2025 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Themed “Beyond Age,” this year’s observance aimed to highlight the often-overlooked challenges confronting senior citizens and advocate for their rights, safety, and dignity.

Fasawe stressed that under the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the administration is scaling up efforts to address the physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and health-related vulnerabilities affecting the aged.

She cited the Renewed Hope Initiative Medical Mission – Support for the Elderly as a key intervention program introduced to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens in the territory.

The initiative, supported by the Office of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in its maiden edition, provided free medical consultations, health screenings, treatments, and essential medications to elderly beneficiaries across the FCT.

Fasawe noted that such programs reflect a growing institutional response to the silent crisis of elder abuse and reinforce the FCTA’s commitment to ensuring that no elderly resident is left behind.
