Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged members of the National Assembly to disregard critics who label the legislature as a rubber stamp of the executive.
Akpabio made the call on Thursday during a joint session at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja to welcome President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking the commemoration of Democracy Day.
In his address, the Senate President praised President Tinubu’s administration for what he described as notable achievements within the last two years.
He also defended the integrity and purpose of the federal lawmakers.
“We should ignore the critics who tag us rubber stamp. They don’t know why we are here,” Akpabio said, affirming the legislature’s commitment to national development and democratic consolidation.
He further appealed to the President to consider establishing a June 12 Museum to document and preserve the legacies of Nigeria’s pro-democracy heroes, many of whom paid the ultimate price in the struggle for democratic governance.
The joint session was part of the events marking Democracy Day, commemorating the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest.
