The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned that any form of democracy that fails to deliver justice, equity, and good governance is a ticking time bomb threatening the peace and unity of the nation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 12, 2025, to mark this year’s Democracy Day, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, called on Nigerian leaders to recognize that good governance is the cornerstone of true democracy and that continued injustice, insecurity, and religious intolerance will erode the nation’s democratic gains.

“As we commemorate June 12, a symbol of our collective struggle for freedom and democracy, we must remember that peace without justice is unsustainable.

“The government must ensure that no one is persecuted for their faith, and victims of religious violence must get justice,” the statement read.

CAN expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity across the country, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings, which it said were threatening Nigeria’s stability.

It called for urgent and sustained government action to secure lives and property.

The Christian body also demanded greater transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership at all levels of government, emphasizing that Nigeria’s abundant resources must be used to address poverty, unemployment, and infrastructural decay.

“Democracy thrives where elections are credible, institutions are accountable, and citizens’ rights are protected,” Okoh stated, while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to improve its systems and processes to restore public confidence in electoral outcomes.

CAN stressed the need for the government to respect free speech, peaceful assembly, and press freedom, and to actively engage citizens in finding inclusive solutions to national problems.

“As we mark this significant day, we pray for the peace, unity, and progress of our country. Nigerians must remain committed to building a just and inclusive nation that truly reflects the sacrifices of our democratic heroes,” CAN concluded.

The association also commended Nigerians, the government, and security agencies who continue to uphold the values of democracy and national cohesion, while reaffirming its commitment to working with all stakeholders for the betterment of the country.
