A 67-year-old French national, Pietier Gilles, has been found dead in a hotel room in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

Gilles, who was reportedly on a long-distance cycling tour from Niger Republic, arrived in Nigeria on May 19 and checked into Hotel Jovina in Gboko on Friday, June 7.

He was discovered dead in his room the following day, Saturday, June 8.

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, confirmed the incident.

According to the report made by the hotel manager, Emmanuel Laha, the tourist had complained of feeling unwell but declined to be taken to a hospital.

A medical practitioner was later invited to examine him, but he was found unresponsive.

Police officers who responded to the report visited the scene, took photographs, and moved the body to the General Hospital in Gboko for autopsy and preservation.

Authorities say an investigation is ongoing and further details will be made available upon conclusion of the autopsy.
