The Acting Director General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Abdulrahman Mohammed, has urged motorists in Abuja to avoid reckless driving during rainfall to prevent accidents and flooding-related incidents.
Mohammed also advised residents to switch off all electrical appliances during downpours as a safety precaution.
He specifically warned against driving through flooded roads, asking residents to patiently wait for water levels to recede before moving their vehicles.
His warning follows an early weather alert issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which forecasted thunderstorms and rainfall across parts of the FCT on Sunday, June 8.
According to a statement by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, similar weather conditions are expected in states neighbouring the FCT, including Kwara, Benue, and Plateau.
The statement also noted that thunderstorms and rain are likely to occur again on Tuesday across parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, and Plateau.
Mohammed emphasized the importance of preparedness and called on residents to make use of the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of any emergency.
