The Peoples Democratic Party in Jigawa State has declared its resolve to unseat Governor Umar Namadi in the 2027 governorship election, citing past political upsets as proof that it is achievable.
Umar Danjani, Deputy Chairman of the PDP in the state, made the declaration in a post on his official Facebook page, where he expressed confidence that the party would reclaim the governorship seat from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Danjani referenced several historical victories where opposition candidates defeated governors from ruling parties, including Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s win in Adamawa in 2019 and Governor Ademola Adeleke’s 2022 triumph in Osun despite the APC controlling the federal government.
He also cited the victories of Governor Seyi Makinde in Oyo and Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi during the 2019 elections, as well as Malam Ibrahim Shekarau’s win in Kano back in 2003.
He concluded his post with a hopeful prayer for PDP’s success in 2027, saying, “May Allah increase our victory.”
Reacting to the PDP’s statement, APC Chairman in Jigawa State, Aminu Gumel, dismissed the opposition’s ambition as unrealistic.
In a telephone interview with our correspondent, Gumel said the people of Jigawa remain solidly behind Governor Namadi, who he described as a transformative leader.
“Jigawa under Governor Namadi is a success story,” Gumel said. “His policies have brought development and progress. The people trust him and the APC. The PDP is chasing shadows.”
He emphasized that the APC-led government has continued to meet the needs of the people and will build on its achievements to secure victory again in 2027.
Gumel urged residents to remain supportive, assuring that the party remains committed to their welfare and prosperity.
With both parties drawing battle lines early, the road to 2027 promises a fierce political contest in Jigawa State.
