The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department has alerted residents in Abuja and nearby states to prepare for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected from the evening of Sunday, June 8.
Acting Director General of the department, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the forecast from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency shows that the FCT, Kwara, Benue, Plateau and parts of Nasarawa may be affected.
In a statement signed by FEMD’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, residents were warned against walking or driving through floodwaters.
The department also advised people to switch off electrical appliances during storms to prevent accidents.
FEMD said the unstable weather will continue into the week, with Monday expected to bring morning rain and thunderstorms across the FCT, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa.
More storms are likely on Tuesday evening in the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue and Plateau.
The department urged residents to take precautions and heed all weather warnings.
It also reminded the public that the toll-free emergency number 112 is available for any urgent assistance.
