Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has advocated for a single five or six-year term for elected public officials, arguing that the current two-term system distracts leaders with re-election concerns and limits effective governance.
Speaking to journalists shortly after Eid-el-Kabir prayers in Ibadan, Makinde said a one-time mandate would enable elected leaders to concentrate fully on delivering their promises without the pressure of preparing for another campaign.
“Out of eight years, we effectively govern for just about five,” the governor remarked, highlighting the disruptions that come with seeking a second term.
Makinde urged Nigerians to rally behind the proposal, which is reportedly under consideration by the National Assembly.
The Eid prayer session was also attended by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal and several Muslim leaders, who offered prayers for continued peace and progress in Oyo State.
