A 43-year-old man identified as Kareem has died after jumping into a well in the Edun area of Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir prayers on Friday.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the deceased was under the influence of a synthetic drug known locally as ‘Colorado’ or ‘Colos’ at the time of the incident.
The tragedy occurred at Ile Alapo in Edun following Sallah celebrations.
In a statement on Saturday, the Head of Media and Publicity of the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed that the service received a distress call around 10:29 a.m.
Firefighters were promptly dispatched and successfully recovered the lifeless body from the well.
“The victim, identified as Kazeem, reportedly jumped into the well under the influence of a hard substance known as Colos shortly after returning from Eid prayers,” the statement read.
The body was later handed over to Inspector Amos of the C Division Police Station in Ilorin.
The fire service noted that the Ministry is awaiting formal identification and claim of the body by the victim’s family.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or WhatsApp messages at the time of filing this report.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sadness and warned residents to avoid drug abuse, stressing that such dangerous habits can lead to fatal consequences.
