Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. The defection ceremony took place on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.
Governor Eno said his decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the state. He described the move as one made from a position of strength, not weakness, noting his admiration for President Bola Tinubu and the need for Akwa Ibom to align with the federal government to secure continued development.
The defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Akwa Ibom, as it ends the Peoples Democratic Party’s 26-year dominance in the state.
The governor’s move is expected to reshape political dynamics and governance in the region.
Governor Eno pledged to support President Tinubu’s economic reforms and his bid for re-election in 2027.
He also expressed readiness to collaborate with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who is from Akwa Ibom, to promote the state’s interests.
