Nigeria Mourns Former CJN Uwais

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria Mohammed Lawal Uwais has died at the age of 89.

He passed away on Friday in Abuja, according to a family source.

Uwais served as the head of Nigeria’s judiciary from 1995 to 2006, making him one of the longest serving Chief Justices in the nation’s history.

His 11 year tenure is remembered for significant contributions to legal reform and judicial integrity.

After his retirement, he continued to play a role in national affairs.

In 2007, he was appointed by then President Umar Musa Yar’Adua to chair the Electoral Reform Committee, which submitted its report in 2008 with key recommendations to improve Nigeria’s electoral process.

Born on June 12, 1936, Uwais had a long and distinguished legal career marked by professionalism and national service.

Funeral arrangements are underway as tributes continue to pour in from across the country.
