The Nigerian Communications Commission has issued a fresh directive compelling telecom operators to disclose all major service outages and their causes to the public ahead of time.
The order, released on Sunday and signed by Acting Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, mandates mobile network providers, internet firms, and other last-mile operators to inform customers at least one week in advance of any planned disruption. They are also to state the affected areas and expected time of restoration.
Subscribers who experience service failures lasting more than 24 hours are to be compensated with airtime or data validity extensions.
NCC’s Director of Technical Standards, Engr. Edoyemi Ogor, explained that the directive follows a federal policy that designates telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure.
