The Independent National Electoral Commission has unveiled a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division aimed at improving data driven decision making, early risk detection, and automation of voter services.

The move was announced on Thursday by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Sam Olumekun, following the Commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja.

Olumekun stated that the new division, which will operate under the ICT Department, is expected to provide geo spatial intelligence that will enhance logistics planning, distribution of election materials, and polling unit allocation.

He further explained that the AI Division will also play a critical role in strengthening the credibility of elections by deploying predictive analytics, risk management tools, and intelligent safeguards.

Olumekun noted that INEC’s initiative is in response to the increasing global focus on the use of artificial intelligence in electoral processes, highlighting both its positive applications and potential for misuse, especially in the spread of disinformation.
