With inflation in the United Kingdom rising to 3.5 percent in April, many Nigerians are beginning to question whether the once-glorified japa journey is still worth the sacrifice.

Fresh figures released by the UK Office for National Statistics on Wednesday show a sharper than expected rise in the Consumer Prices Index, driven by spikes in energy, water and vehicle costs.

The news lands hard for thousands of Nigerian professionals and students who relocated in search of a better life, only to meet swelling bills, tight housing, and tougher immigration rules.

UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves admitted that rising living costs are still hitting working people hard-a concern now shared by migrants juggling steep rent, transportation, and utility expenses.

While the UK remains a symbol of opportunity, the lived experience of many newcomers is painting a far more complex picture than social media often portrays.
