A man suspected of stealing a motorcycle met a tragic end on Thursday when he was lynched by an angry mob at Old Kutunku in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
The suspect had reportedly joined worshippers at a local mosque, pretending to pray. According to eyewitness Suleiman Adamu, the man performed ablution and entered the mosque, but shortly after, he emerged and allegedly made away with a parked motorcycle.
He was spotted by a vigilant resident who raised the alarm. A group of locals gave chase, pursuing him to a nearby farm where he reportedly lost control of the bike and fell.
“The man came like any other worshipper. He performed ablution and went into the mosque. Minutes later, he came out again, took a bike and fled. He was chased down and caught at a farm,” Adamu recounted.
The mob descended on the suspect, using wood and other objects to beat him to death before local vigilante personnel could intervene.
Garba, a vigilante member, confirmed the incident and lamented the increasing cases of motorcycle theft in Gwagwalada.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adeh Josephine, said the command was not yet aware of the incident but promised to investigate.
