To boost road safety and modernise city infrastructure, the Federal Capital Territory Executive Committee has approved a major upgrade of the streetlights on the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway.

The 14-kilometre stretch, also known as Ring Road One, runs from Maitama to Gudu and has remained in darkness for years due to aging and ineffective lighting.

Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Richard Dauda, made the announcement after the committee’s fourteenth meeting chaired by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

“The expressway was completed between 2005 and 2006, and the lights installed back then are now obsolete,” Dauda said. “Most sections are dark at night, posing security and safety risks.”

He revealed that a hybrid street lighting system would be deployed to illuminate the busy road, making it safer and more motorable after dark.

The contract is one of seven memos submitted by the FCDA, with a total of nine projects approved by the committee to support infrastructure growth across the capital.

Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Chidi Amadi, said the approvals reflect government’s commitment to upgrading Abuja and improving the living conditions of its residents.
