Terror gripped Idi Araba, Mushin on Sunday when a two-storey building under construction suddenly crumbled along Ishaga Road, trapping workers beneath the rubble.
Emergency responders raced to the scene around 3:30 p.m., pulling out three injured victims alive and recovering one lifeless body. Rescue teams battled into the night, searching for more possible survivors.
“I heard a thunderous crash and saw people running. It is a miracle more were not buried alive,” said Justine Madueke, a witness to the tragic scene.
Officials from NEMA, LASEMA, the Fire Service, and the Police were swift to arrive. Ibrahim Farinloye of NEMA confirmed the casualty toll, while Fire and Rescue Service boss, Margaret Adeseye, said the injured were adult males with various degrees of wounds.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but attention is now turning to questions of safety and structural integrity at the site.
As investigations continue, the tragedy has once again raised alarms over building standards in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
