Nigerian pastor and televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been deported from South Africa, despite being cleared of rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking charges in April.
Omotoso, founder of Jesus Dominion International, was escorted by immigration officials to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Sunday and placed on a flight back to Nigeria.
South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs declared him an “undesirable person,” banning him from re-entry for at least five years.
His legal battles began in 2017, with accusations from several women who had once been part of his ministry.
Although the Eastern Cape High Court found him and two co-accused not guilty, Home Affairs insists his continued stay violated immigration laws.
“This classification bars him from re-entering South Africa for five years,” said Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza. “He may seek a review at the end of that period under the Immigration Act.”
Omotoso’s deportation has reignited public debate. Gender rights advocates have criticized the outcome, viewing it as a missed chance for justice.
The Justice Ministry has since ordered a review of the case’s prosecution, citing lapses in handling sensitive matters involving gender-based violence.
His removal also reflects rising immigration enforcement in South Africa.
Over 180 Nigerians have been deported since early 2024 alone.
