The Lagos State Government has declared a full ban on single use plastics beginning July 1, 2025, marking a bold step in its fight against environmental degradation.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement timeline during a meeting with representatives of Tetra Pak West Africa at the Alausa Secretariat.

Wahab said the government had already eliminated single use plastics from its operations and expected all businesses and individuals to follow suit. “This is not a sudden move,” he explained. “We announced the phase-out last year when we banned Styrofoam food packs. Now, we are enforcing it.”

He stressed that producers must take full responsibility for their packaging materials, in line with global best practices.

“We will no longer tolerate practices that pollute our city and endanger public health,” he added.

In response, Tetra Pak West Africa’s Managing Director, Haithem Debbiche, welcomed the policy, pledging the company’s support and collaboration toward sustainable packaging solutions.

With this ban, Lagos joins global cities taking concrete action against plastic pollution, setting a strong example for other Nigerian states to follow.
