Controversial social media figure Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), was re-arraigned on Thursday before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of cyberbullying against top Nigerian celebrities.

VDM faces a five-count charge filed by the Inspector General of Police under the Cybercrime Act, accusing him of using his Instagram platform to harass, defame, and threaten individuals including Nollywood stars Iyabo Ojo, Tonto Dikeh, and music producer Samklef.

The prosecution alleges that VDM posted videos containing offensive content, vulgar accusations, and unverified claims. On October 13, 2023, he allegedly shared a video targeting Samklef with humiliating language.

Two weeks later, he reportedly posted another video making crude and damaging remarks about Iyabo Ojo and her daughter.

The accusations intensified on January 19, 2024, when VDM claimed Tonto Dikeh mismanaged funds raised for the “Justice for Mohbad” campaign and linked her to the controversial blog Gistlover.

In a separate video from March 2024, he reportedly launched verbal attacks on senior public officials, which the authorities labeled insulting and inappropriate.

VDM pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer, human rights advocate Deji Adeyanju, asked the court to retain the bail previously granted by Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon.

Prosecutor Victor Okoye did not oppose the request, and Justice Musa Liman maintained the bail terms – ₦10 million and two sureties with credible professional or civil service status.

The case was adjourned to July 24 for trial. It highlights the increasing legal focus on the use of social media in Nigeria and the thin line between free expression and reputational abuse.
