Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of actress and outspoken body positivity advocate, Monalisa Ayobami Stephen, who passed away in Lagos on Tuesday, May 13, at the age of 33.

Family sources revealed that the actress died from complications arising from low blood sugar and internal bleeding.

Her death was later confirmed by entertainment promoter Seun Oloketuyi, who paid tribute to her on social media.

Monalisa was known not only for her roles on screen but also for her bold advocacy on plus-size representation, mental health, and self-love.

With a large following online, she used her platform to challenge stereotypes, confront taboos, and encourage self-acceptance—especially among women often marginalized for their body size.

Her outspokenness was both admired and criticized, particularly after a 2023 interview in which she shared intimate personal experiences in an effort to spark conversation around sexuality and body autonomy.

Despite the backlash, she remained true to her message and mission.

Monalisa’s voice was one of strength, truth, and relentless courage.

Tributes continue to pour in from fans, friends, and fellow creatives, all honouring a life that fiercely championed authenticity and empowerment.

Her family is yet to release an official statement.
