Nigerian international and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has been placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine sustained during a Premier League clash against Leicester City.
The 27-year-old forward suffered the life-threatening injury after a collision with the goalpost in the dying minutes of the game.
Despite the impact, he was allowed to continue playing until the final whistle.
Awoniyi was rushed into surgery on Monday night. The club confirmed he is “recovering well,” though still in a medically induced coma to limit movement and stabilize his heart rate during recovery.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis voiced concern over the handling of the incident and stressed that Awoniyi’s well-being must remain the top priority.
While his condition is not considered fatal, the situation has raised serious questions about player safety protocols and sparked renewed calls for reform, especially in how offside decisions and in-game injuries are managed.
The football world now watches and prays for Awoniyi’s full recovery as he battles through a critical phase of healing.
