The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has declared Friday, May 30, 2025, a complete sit-at-home day across the Southeast in remembrance of Biafra’s fallen heroes and heroines.

In a statement issued on Monday, IPOB’s spokesperson Emma Powerful called on all residents to observe the annual Biafra Heroes Memorial Day by staying indoors from midnight to midnight.

According to him, the day is dedicated to reflecting on the sacrifices made during the civil war and the ongoing quest for Biafran self-determination.

“This is a solemn day for unity and remembrance,” Powerful stated. “All streets, markets, schools, offices and transportation activities within Biafran land must shut down in honour of our martyrs.”

Awareness campaigns and special radio programmes have already begun across IPOB platforms, including Radio Biafra. Throughout May, the group is hosting lectures and tributes to rally global support and participation.

Raising security concerns, IPOB warned residents of potential threats from Nigerian security forces, accusing them of using past memorials as opportunities for violent crackdowns.

“For your safety and to honour our heroes, remain indoors. Nigerian forces often target civilians on this day. Disregard this warning at your own risk,” the statement cautioned.

Transport operators and businesses have been instructed to suspend activities entirely. IPOB insists the directive is a peaceful civil action, not a call to violence, reaffirming its commitment to preserving the lives and dignity of the Igbo people.

As the date approaches, IPOB is urging global sympathizers to join in what it describes as a sacred observance in the history of the Biafran struggle.
