Nigeria’s Mobile Boom Grows as 5G Inches Forward

Nigeria’s telecom sector added 3.39 million active phone lines in the first quarter of 2025, pushing total subscriptions to 172.7 million and raising teledensity to 79.67 percent.

According to fresh industry figures, 4G technology remains dominant with nearly half the market, while 5G use saw a mild uptick, now accounting for 4.66 million users or 2.70 percent of total subscriptions.

Broadband usage also climbed, reaching 103.5 million with a penetration rate of 47.73 percent.

MTN retained its lead in the market with 90 million users, ahead of Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile.

Meanwhile, MTN issued an apology following a service disruption on Tuesday that left many subscribers disconnected for several hours.
