A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan has sentenced Murphy Afolabi to two years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to trafficking cannabis and tramadol.

Justice Nkeonye Maha delivered the verdict, convicting Afolabi on two counts after he was found in possession of 360 grammes of cannabis sativa and eight grammes of tramadol. The judge gave Afolabi one year for each count, to run concurrently from the day of his arrest.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested Afolabi on November 1, 2024, in the Sanyo area of Ibadan with two bags containing the banned substances.

In her ruling, Justice Maha acknowledged Afolabi’s guilty plea and the defence counsel’s appeal for mercy, which highlighted his role as a father of two, husband, and caregiver to an aged mother.

The judge, however, warned the convict to stay away from crime after serving his sentence, saying he may not be as fortunate if caught again.

The offences violate Section Eleven of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation 2004.
