Tension is brewing across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory as workers under the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees have rejected a proposed N40,000 wage increase, branding it an insult to their rights and dignity.
Addressing journalists in Gwagwalada, the FCT Secretary of the union, Comrade Sa’ad Abdulmumin, revealed that council chairmen were plotting to implement a flat N40,000 increment—ignoring the N70,000 minimum wage demand already tabled by the union.
“We will resist this betrayal,” Abdulmumin declared. “The council bosses want to follow the FCT administration’s lead, but we won’t allow any attempt to sidestep the national wage template.”
The union warned of mass mobilization, protests, and industrial actions if the chairmen refuse to adopt the full minimum wage proposal.
It also vowed to monitor ongoing financial activities in the councils, warning that any suspicious moves during the strike would be reported to anti-corruption agencies.
As the chairmen remain silent—refusing to comment—the union insists it will not back down, declaring that workers’ welfare is not up for negotiation.
