In a bold move to reshape teacher training in Nigeria, the Federal Government has authorised all Federal Colleges of Education to begin awarding Bachelor’s Degrees in Education alongside the traditional Nigeria Certificate in Education.

This groundbreaking development follows the signing of the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, giving legal backing to the Dual Mandate Policy.

Announcing the policy in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa described it as a transformative step aimed at improving both the quality and reach of teacher education across the country.

“This is more than an upgrade. It is a complete shift in how we train teachers. We are raising the bar and widening access,” Alausa said.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, colleges can participate once they meet the National Universities Commission’s requirements, making the policy open and adaptable.

The reform aligns with global standards and is seen as a key milestone in Nigeria’s broader education renewal agenda.
