The Federal Government is set to install solar power systems in select prisons to boost inmate welfare, strengthen security, and power essential services.
The plan was unveiled during a meeting in Abuja where the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, appealed for support from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
Nwakuche described prisons as self-contained communities needing reliable electricity for education, farming, and safety.
“We have inmates pursuing degrees, masters, and even PhDs. Adequate lighting is crucial for their safety and development,” Nwakuche said.
REA Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, pledged to deliver solar energy solutions to correctional centres and train inmates in renewable energy technologies, equipping them with vital skills for life after prison.
