The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State, James Melvin Ejeh, has given Fulani herdsmen a firm forty eight hour ultimatum to vacate all farmlands across the region.
Ejeh issued the order during a critical stakeholders meeting held on Saturday April twenty six at the council secretariat in Obagaji, aimed at easing rising tensions between farmers and herders ahead of the planting season.
Addressing traditional rulers, Fulani leaders, youth groups, and security agencies, Ejeh stressed that farming is the lifeblood of Agatu’s economy and must be protected at all costs.
“Our farmers must have free and safe access to their lands. We cannot allow anything to disrupt this planting season,” Ejeh declared.
While the area has enjoyed relative peace, the Chairman emphasized that securing farming activities remains a top priority.
In a dramatic turn, the Ado of the Fulani community pleaded for a one week extension to allow herders time to relocate.
Ejeh accepted the request under strict conditions of non violence and order, with local youth groups pledging full support.
Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services praised the peaceful dialogue and pledged their backing to ensure smooth enforcement.
Traditional leaders, including Chief John Agidani representing the Och’Agatu, applauded Ejeh’s leadership and urged all parties to maintain the fragile peace.
