Lagos State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over what it described as rushed and unclear preparations for the upcoming local council polls scheduled for July.

In a fiery plenary session, lawmakers summoned the Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, along with all LASIEC commissioners, demanding a thorough explanation of their plans for the elections.

Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Petitions, Human Rights and LASIEC, Oladipo Ajomale, criticised the commission’s guidelines, calling them vague and insufficient.

“The process appears hurried. The guidelines do not address voters’ concerns. The people need answers,” he said.

Ajomale also questioned whether the commission would adopt electronic voting or revert to outdated methods, while raising issues about ad-hoc staff recruitment and utilisation of allocated funds.

Supporting the motion, lawmaker Kehinde Joseph from Alimosho Constituency II stressed the need for fiscal transparency.

“They must tell us how public funds have been spent,” he stated.

Solomon Bonu from Badagry Constituency I echoed voters’ frustrations, pointing to the opposition’s complaints and the lack of adequate voter education.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the Clerk to formally summon LASIEC leadership to appear before the House and provide full disclosure on their preparations.

The Assembly insists the polls must reflect transparency, accountability and due process.
