Abuja residents are feeling the heat in their kitchens as the cost of cooking a pot of jollof rice surged across the city’s major markets, a new report by SBM Intelligence has revealed.
According to the report, the average cost of preparing jollof rice rose sharply in the first quarter of 2025 in both Wuse II and Nyanya, two prominent markets in the Federal Capital Territory.
In Wuse II, prices jumped from N28,300 in September 2024 to N30,500 in March 2025, marking a 7.8 percent increase.
Meanwhile, Nyanya recorded a 7.6 percent rise, with prices moving from N25,920 to N27,900 within the same period.
SBM attributed the hike to the rising cost of staple ingredients including turkey, rice, onions and vegetable oil, coupled with high fuel and electricity costs.
Despite being the heart of government, the capital city has not been spared from the biting wave of food inflation sweeping across the country.
The report noted that many residents are struggling with shrinking purchasing power and mounting household expenses, as food items become increasingly unaffordable.
