In a move that caught many by surprise, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr Kayode Opeifa, on Monday visited Idu Train Station in Abuja to assess the breakdown of its water and power systems.
The station, a major hub in the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor, had faced service disruptions due to a collapsed water system affecting toilet operations. Opeifa, in a tweet on Tuesday morning, confirmed that the NRC engineering team had applied a temporary solution. “The toilet was clean and flushed,” he wrote, signaling progress on the repairs.
He further noted that the power supply was intentionally shut down during his inspection to manage diesel consumption in the absence of electricity from the national grid.
Opeifa praised the swift response and teamwork of the corporation’s civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers who were mobilized to restore functionality.
The surprise visit underscores a growing commitment by NRC leadership to maintain service quality and quickly address lapses affecting passenger experience.
