The Directorate of Road Traffic Services in the Federal Capital Territory has assured residents that it is actively working to resolve the current shortage of vehicle number plates in Abuja.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the DRTS blamed the scarcity on irregular and inadequate supply from the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Plant.

The Directorate, however, noted that steps are already being taken to stabilize the situation and ease the pressure on motorists.

Amid the scarcity, the agency raised concerns over the activities of fraudsters posing as DRTS officials in an attempt to extort unsuspecting vehicle owners.

It warned the public not to engage with any individual or agent claiming to offer number plates outside the official DRTS Self Service Portal.

“The DRTS strongly disassociates itself from these illegal dealings,” the statement read. “All legitimate services and prices are clearly listed on our website, and motorists are advised to insist on paying only approved fees.”

To tackle the rising cases of impersonation, the DRTS disclosed it is collaborating with security agencies to arrest and prosecute offenders.

The Directorate also encouraged residents to report suspicious persons and illegal transactions to its management.

“We remain committed to delivering transparent, efficient and accountable services to all road users in the FCT,” the agency affirmed.
