Residents of Unguwar Shadadi in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory were thrown into shock early Tuesday morning as another newborn baby was discovered abandoned on a refuse heap.

The baby, believed to have been dumped by an unidentified woman, was found by local vigilantes around 5am during the final rounds of their night patrol.

Danjuma Alkali, one of the vigilante members, said the cry of the infant wrapped in a piece of cloth drew their attention to the dumpsite.

“We rushed to the spot and found the baby lying helplessly. It was a heartbreaking scene,” he said.

With the social welfare department of the council on strike, the baby was taken to a nearby motherless home on the advice of a community elder, Alkali added.

The disturbing incident comes barely two weeks after another newborn was found abandoned at an uncompleted building in Kuchiako, also within the council.

That case was promptly reported to security agencies.

The police have confirmed the latest incident and assured that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the culprit.

Residents have called for stronger community awareness and better welfare response to prevent such heartless acts.
