Sevilla’s sporting director, Victor Orta, has admitted that the Spanish club’s decision to sign Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho was a misstep, describing the move as one that failed to deliver expected results.

Orta made the revelation while speaking on the club’s recent transfer reviews, singling out Iheanacho’s underwhelming stint in La Liga.

Despite a promising arrival, the former Leicester City striker struggled for consistency, scoring just once in 11 league appearances and adding three goals in the Copa del Rey — all against lower-tier sides.

“Kelechi did not meet the expectations we had when we brought him in.

Sometimes you make decisions that do not work out, and this was one of them,” Orta said, reflecting on what appears to be a closed chapter.

Since his exit from Sevilla, Iheanacho has begun to rediscover form at Middlesbrough in the English Championship.

He netted his debut goal in a 2-1 win over Oxford United and recently registered two assists in a dominant display against Blackburn, sparking hopes of a career revival.

As Sevilla reshapes its squad under coach Joaquin Caparros, the door seems firmly shut on a return for Iheanacho.

For the Super Eagles striker, the focus now is to stay consistent, make his mark in England, and perhaps earn another shot at top-flight football.
