The House of Representatives has officially inaugurated a 21-member ad hoc committee to assume legislative functions in Rivers State, following the suspension of the state’s House of Assembly.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, speaking at the National Assembly in Abuja, said the intervention was in line with the emergency proclamation issued by President Bola Tinubu to safeguard governance in the troubled state.

He charged members of the committee to uphold neutrality and prioritize the restoration of peace, order, and functional governance in Rivers.

The committee is chaired by House Leader, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, with Ali Isah from Gombe serving as deputy.

Members were carefully selected from all six geopolitical zones of the country, reflecting national balance.

Notably absent was James Faleke, representing the South West.

The committee’s inauguration comes amid ongoing political unrest in Rivers, with the House of Assembly crippled by internal crisis.

The federal lawmakers are expected to step in as a stabilizing force to ensure legislative continuity and uphold democratic processes in the state.
